ShowBoats International's Cover Article "THE LIVING END"

The owners of Delta Marine's latest launch invested much more than money in planning, designing and building exquisite 147-foot Gran Finale.

This story begins with a dining table. Designed by Dakota Jackson and built of sapele and lacewood, it resides proudly in the home of a successful California businessman. So well liked is this particular table that when the businessman decided to build a new yacht, the design of the piece was used as a template for the boat's interior.

Today, a similar table graces the dining salon of the new Gran Finale, delivered by Delta Marine in late February. When the table arrived from New York, however, there was a problem: it did not match the rest of the joinery in the boat. "The matrix of the lacewood grain was too large," the owner recalls vividly, " and the color was wrong. We sent it back and told them that it needed to match the rest of the furniture, but they said they'd looked everywhere but couldn't find the same quality used in the table in my house, it had all been bought up".

As it turned out, Delta Marine had purchased the entire worldwide supply of the very best lacewood for the project, and it was all sitting at the yard in Seattle. Although he was not pleased at the time, the owner now laughs as he tells the tale. "In the end, Delta had to send some lacewood veneers to New York, so that the tabletop would match what had been built for the boat. It was crazy, but look at the result."

The table is perfect, and Gran Finale's interior is a testament to the careful execution of a design that developed over two years by the owner and his designer, Juan Carlos Espinosa.

The owner speaks highly of Espinosa. Jay Miner, who heads Delta's design office, concurs, describing Espinosa as someone whose work is accurate, who integrates well into a team, and who listens well to ensure his clients' wishes are incorporated into the final design. The owner estimates that in the two years he and Espinosa worked together on the design, he invested at least three thousand hours of his personal time in the design process, which was driven by several over-riding criteria.
